New Article by Alexander N. Chumakov Explores Cultural and Civilizational Dialogue in the Modern Global World

A new article by Professor Alexander N. Chumakov of Lomonosov Moscow State University has been published by Springer in the collective volume From Intercivilizational Encounters to Intercivilizational Analysis (Emerging Globalities and Civilizational Perspectives Series, 2025). The article, titled “Dialogue Among Cultural and Civilizational Values in the Modern World: Robertson’s Contribution to Global Studies in Russia,” examines the impact of Roland Robertson’s ideas on Russian global studies and highlights the crucial role of cultural-civilizational dialogue in today’s interconnected world.

In this work, Prof. Chumakov:

  • analyzes Robertson’s pioneering contribution to the understanding of globalization and civilizational processes;
  • discusses how the notions of globalization and glocalization shaped Russian approaches to global studies;
  • reviews major intellectual traditions in Russia, including Slavophile, Westernizing, and Eurasian perspectives;
  • argues for the necessity of intercivilizational dialogue as the only viable path to resolving global contradictions;
  • introduces the concept of the “cultural-civilizational system” as a more accurate framework for describing contemporary societies.

According to Chumakov, in a world of deepening global interdependence, humanity must rely on shared civilizational principles - common ethical standards, legal norms, and value foundations - to ensure cooperation, peaceful coexistence, and long-term stability.

The Article will be of particular interest to researchers in global studies, philosophy, political science, international relations, and all who explore the dynamics of global transformation.
